Dr. Mohammed Uddin’s research focused on the understanding of human intelligence and neurodevelopmental disorders (i.e. autism, epilepsy, intellectual disability etc.) aetiology through the application of i) single cell technologies (mRNA, proteomics), ii) mRNA based gene therapies and iii) applying deterministic and machine learning algorithms. During his postdoctoral training, he was awarded Canada’s prestigious international Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship and the best trainee award (Andrew Sass-Kortsak Award) by The Hospital for Sick Children for discovering a subset of exons are conserved for brain expression. He has co-published over 80 papers including many high impact journals such as Science, Nature Genetics, Nature Neuroscience, and JAMA. His work has been highlighted in numerous national and international news outlets, including Globe and Mail, Nature News etc. Dr. Uddin have a unique multidisciplinary educational background that lead to the discovery of OTUD7A gene as the causal gene for 15q13.3 related neurodevelopmental disorders. His work on predicting pathogenicity of human mutations was successfully patented and subsequently licensed for variant interpretations. His current lab developing AI integrated systems with single cell OMICs technologies and mRNA antisense based therapeutics for broader neurodevelopmental genetic disorders. He recently help co-found a Toronto based biotech startup GenomeArc Inc. based on his patent on clinical genomics. His current research focused on human brain cell characterization compared to other close primates and small molecule (i.e. mRNA) drug design for neurogenetic disorders.
